Forest Shroud
The exhibition is a tribute to, and, at the same time, a remembrance of, my aesthetic and emotional impressions that I have been experiencing since my childhood days when I went for walks in the forest that was at the edge of the horizon seen from the windows of my parents’ house. In my childhood, that forest witnessed my meditations, raptures and longings. The birches that grew there responded to my touching their bark with the rustling of their leaves… In wintertime, the wind would shake the snow off the pine branches onto my head. On my coming back to my home after many years, the first impression I got was that the woods had changed very little. The same beautiful slender trees and spruces, the dark backwoods... only the rotten tree trunks, overthrown by the wind, had multiplied in the gorge… The forest stream continued its whisper as before. I felt a desire to present the forest of my childhood with due respect and dignity. To show the energy that resides in it. To photograph its beauty, profound silence, the tree trunks that give shape to the organs of the forest, the delicate patterns of light that penetrate the abundance of spruces. I have completed several such works…having failed to do a few more. One day, a maddening noise of numerous chainsaws reached the window of my house. So I veiled the photos with a shroud.
Janusz Połom
A graduate of the Direction of Photography and TV Production Department and the Direction Department of PWSFTviT (The National Higher School of Film Television and Theatre) in Lodz. He was a lecturer, and from 1981 to 1984, the Dean of the Direction of Photography and TV Production Department of this school. From 1971 to 1976 he belonged to the Workshop of the Film Form at PWSFTviT. After graduation he worked as a camera operator at WFO (Educational Film Studio) and SMFF SE-MA-FOR (Studio of Small Film Forms), where he directed several short films. As a photographer he presented an exhibition of his works at the Biennale de Paris in 1982 and in 1983 he took part, as one of 75 Polish artists of the 20th century, in the largest exhibition of Polish contemporary art “Presences Polonaises – l’art. Vivant autour du Musée de Lodz” at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 1986 he emigrated to Canada and then to Mexico, where he gave lectures at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematografica. He arranged a number of exhibitions there, among others, at the Centro Naciónal de las Artes, Casa de La Cultura Coyoacán in 1998, at the El Atrio Gallery, as part of the Fotoseptiembre Photography Festival in 1998. In Canada he had an exhibition in Montréal at the Galerie Entre-Cadre and Centre culturel Henri-Lemieux in LaSalle. In the 1990s he had an exhibition of his photographic works at the Film Museum in Lodz twice and in 2000 in the Museum of the City of Lodz. He has recently had individual exhibitions, among others, at the Film Museum in Lodz, The Gallery 2b in Warsaw (2012), Rathaus Galerie in Wassenberg (2014) and the BWA Gallery in Olsztyn (2015). In 2014 he took part in the Kosmos wzywa! (Cosmos Calling!) exhibition in Zachęta – National Gallery of Art. In 2016 he presented his multimedia works “Pejzaż w zagrożeniu” (Endangered Landscape) at BWA in Olsztyn. In March of this year he had an exhibition in the Imaginarium Gallery of the ŁDK (Lodz House of Culture). He is the author of two monographs: “Znikąd do nikąd” (From nowhere to nowhere) and “Na 275. Kilometrze” (At the 275th kilometer). He is a university professor and gives lectures on photography at the Institute of Fine Arts of the Faculty of Art at the University of Warmia and Mazury.

Leśny całun
Wystawa „Leśny całun” jest hołdem i jednocześnie pamiątką moich wrażeń estetycznych i emocjonalnych, jakich od dziecka doznawałem gdy wędrowałem po lesie, który jeszcze do niedawna zamykał horyzont widziany z okna rodzinnego domu. W dzieciństwie ten las był świadkiem moich rozmyślań, wzruszeń i tęsknot. Brzozy tam rosnące, na dotyk ich kory, odpowiadały mi szumem liści… Zimą wiatr strząsał na moją głowę śnieg z sosnowych gałązek. Gdy powróciłem w rodzinne strony po latach, pierwsze wrażenie było takie, że w borze niewiele się zmieniło. Te same piękne, strzeliste sosny i świerki, mroczne mateczniki. Tylko zmurszałych, przewróconych przez wiatr lub czas pni starych drzew namnożyło się w wąwozie… Leśny strumień szemrał jak dawniej. Zapragnąłem las mojego dzieciństwa przedstawić godnie, dostojnie. Ukazać tkwiącą w nim energię. Sfotografować jego piękno, głęboką ciszę, pnie tworzące formy leśnych organów, delikatne rytmy światła przenikające przez gęsto porastające świerki. Wykonałem kilka takich prac. Nie zdążyłem wykonać więcej. Pewnego dnia do okna mojego domu doszedł wściekły jazgot motorowych pił. Zdjęcia okryłem więc żałobnym całunem.

Absolwent Wydziału Operatorskiego i Realizacji Telewizyjnej oraz Wydziału Reżyserii PWSFTviT w Łodzi. Wykładowca, a w latach 1981–1984 dziekan Wydziału Operatorskiego i Realizacji Telewizyjnej tejże uczelni. W latach 1971–1976 należał do Warsztatu Formy Filmowej przy PWSFTviT. Po ukończeniu studiów pracował jako operator filmowy w WFO i SMFF SE-MA-FOR, w którym wyreżyserował kilka filmów krótkometrażowych. Jako fotografik wystawiał swoje prace na Biennale de Paris w 1982 r, a w 1983 r. uczestniczył, jako jeden z 75 artystów polskich XX wieku, w największej wystawie polskiej sztuki współczesnej „Presences Polonaises – l’ art. Vivant autour du Musée de Lodz w Centrum Georges Pompidou w Paryżu. W roku 1986 wyemigrował do Kanady, a następnie do Meksyku, gdzie wykładał w Centro de Capacitación Cinematografica. Tam też zrealizował szereg wystaw, m.in.: w Centro Naciónal de las Artes, Casa de La Cultura Coyacan w 1998 r, Galerii „El Atrio” – w ramach Festiwalu Fotograficznego „Fotoseptiembre”, w 1998 r. i in. W Kanadzie wystawiał w Montréalu w Galerii Entre - Cadre” i Centre culturel Henri-Lemieux La Salle. Dwukrotnie, w latach 90 wystawiał swoje prace fotograficzne w Muzeum Kinematografii w Łodzi, a w 2000 r. – w Muzeum Miasta Łodzi. Ostatnio wystawiał indywidualnie m.in. w Muzeum Kinematografii w Łodzi, Galerii 2b w Warszawie (2012 r.), Galerie Rathaus w Wassenbergu (2014 r.) i Galerii BWA w Olsztynie (2015 r.). W roku 2014 uczestniczył w wystawie „Kosmos wzywa!” w Zachęcie – Narodowej Galerii Sztuki. W 2016 prezentował multimedialną wystawę „Pejzaż w zagrożeniu” w BWA w Olsztynie. W marcu br. Wystawiał w Galerii Imaginarium ŁDK w Łodzi. Jest autorem 2 monografii: „Znikad donikąd” i „Na 275. Kilometrze”. Jest profesorem uniwersyteckim, wykłada fotografię w Instytucie Sztuk Pięknych na Wydziale Sztuki UWM.
